About Kunya Village

Kunya Village is situated approximately 80 kilometres from Kisumu City, on the Western region of Kenya. The village has approximately 5,000 people, but Mama na Dada serves other villages neighbouring Kunya, making its population of coverage approximately 10,000. 50% of this population is youth below 21 years. The village is based in Bondo District, which has the second highest AIDS prevalence rate in the country. This is a malaria prone area and 1 in every 4 children die from malaria before their 5th birthday.
Sixty-five percent of the population in Kunya Village live on less than $1 a day. Members of this community are either engaged in fishing or small-scale subsistence farming. The main foods are fish, green vegetables and maize meal. Because of the abject poverty in the community, many children do not go to school beyond primary school level, especially girls, who then get married very early.
