GGati Art Center
The
GGati Art Center project was started by Mama na Dada Board
member Elizabeth Stephenson in 2004 when she made her second trip to
Kunya Village. A trained artist, Elizabeth felt it who help the
children develop self esteem if they could learn to express themselves
through art. Joyce Oneko put out a call to the children in the
village inviting those who were interested in participating in the
art program to come to the center.
Elizabeth taught the children 2 hours a day for 8 consecutive days. About 8 children came consistently and formed a core group. She felt that once these children became skilled enough, they would in turn teach other children.
In
2005 on her next trip to Kunya Village, Elizabeth met an artist from
Kisumu named Orato who volunteered to come to the village to help with
the program and teach on Saturdays. Mama na Dada agreed to pay for
his room and board along with a small salary to cover his transportation
costs. Orato has been an angel in helping the children expand their
skills and talents as well as helping them develop their self-esteem.
