Educational Scholarship Program

Less than 30% of families can afford to send their children to secondary school, which costs approximately $500 annually.  In 2004, primary school education became free for children. The number of students increased drastically, as families all over Kenya embraced the opportunity to educate their children. The excitement of the children over their education is evident by the droves of children seen walking (sometimes as far as 10 km each way) to school each day as early as 6 a.m.

However, upon completion of Standard 8, most children are forced to leave school regardless of their academic performance or potential because their families cannot afford the $500 required for their continued education. Without the opportunity to complete high school, their future is bleak. With few jobs in the village and scarcity of resources, the children face a life of poverty with little or no potential of improvement.  Many girls turn to early-age marriage and become young mothers, unable to support themselves or their children. Many boys try their hands at farming or fishing, often fleeing the village for life on the streets in desperate attempts to find a better life. Many end up sniffing glue and living on the streets permanently.

Lillian - Scholarship RecipientThe only way to help these young people improve their lives is to ensure their access to further education. They are bright, energetic individuals who embrace and appreciate education. Mama Na Dada currently sponsors ten individuals through secondary school scholarships.

There are hundreds more children desperately wanting the opportunity to continue their education. The cost of sponsoring a child in secondary school is only $500 annually. Please consider sponsoring a child today and beyond. You can make a long-lasting difference in a child’s life by giving them the gift of education and self-sufficiency.
